CANON INFORMATION

CHARACTER NAME: Maverick Taylor.
CANON: No End webcomic.
HISTORY:
Character profile, not quite a wiki, but tbh it’s better than most webcomic wikis. And Ramona is there! Hi, Ramona!

STRENGTHS:
Heart of Gold: N-no, really… He’s a foul-mouthed brat that will complain until his jaw aches if he's not doing the thing he wants to do, but Maverick is also the type to go to great lengths to help someone else out, even if it puts him in danger. He enjoys the kindness people show, even if he thinks it comes from a place of naïveté, and would like for the world to take after their example. He adores cats and takes care of the strays that hang around the bar, inn, and safehouse that he and his mom manage, but that's as close to adopting he’ll ever get even with the positive experience with Ramona taking him in, because he knows that there are people that are right for that job and he's not one of them. He cares too much to put a kid through being raised by him.

Eye for Details: When your city is run by the mafia and you’re buds with military criminals, it's a good idea to be sneaky and be able to spot other sneaky people. Mav’s also got deuteranopia, a type of colorblindness, so he's in the habit of studying the small things rather than just picking out a simple marker like “red hoodie black hat guy”. He's not always in the know, but he does his best to keep himself and those he can be useful to in a way that they can always make the best of a situation. Picking up on stuff is a skill he's happy to exercise, in addition to one he's good at!

Initiative: ...Although if you were to ask him, he'd prefer to put it as “gets shit done”. He might talk as if he's put upon, but Maverick would rarely ever deny something that someone needed of him. Part of it is wanting to have his existence validated, but on the whole, he's just got a general willingness to use his smarts to keep him on top of things and prepared… Intentions aside, if something needs doing, chances are good that he's already started doing it, or has hatched five different plans to choose from.

FLAWS:
Untreated PTSD: Mav’s history has not been kind to him, even if he’d rather keep that under wraps, and unfortunately mental health has never been high on his list of concerns, given the undead threat and the mafia running his city. His refusal to acknowledge how deeply he’s been affected by his past is partly based on his perception of that being a weakness, and partly because he just...doesn't know any better. It has its claws deep in him, though, coming out in little leaks here and there so he doesn't snap, and with how he goes through life, it will probably continue to be untreated for a long, long time.

Annoying: Remember that thing about the heart of gold? Well, it's true, but he keeps that golden heart buried really, really deep, under several layers of profanity, grime, insulting people, more profanity, and just generally being a pain in the ass. It doesn’t really matter how sweet of a person he is at his core when he spends so much time hiding just how sweet he is, or showcasing his less favorable features because he stubbornly refuses to shut his mouth when it’s appropriate. Even his Mama says he’s a douchebag! He’s just a loud and belligerent boy whose biggest goal in life seems to be getting remembered for being an annoying little shit.

Poor Self-Esteem: As mentioned above, part of being annoying is so that he’ll stick in people’s memories, for those who count. He frequently insults himself as much as he insults others, even if he uses a jovial tone when he does it, and he’ll gloat until he goes hoarse if he's praised or otherwise proven necessary, but when he goes back to being on his own, such things puzzle him. He’s convinced that people liking him is either some kind of joke or just people being really stupid, maybe misguided because Ramona is so great and he's at Ramona’s side. There's nothing genuinely great about him, as far as he's concerned, from his stupid red hair, his stupid inability to see all the colors, his love of being an asshole, the list goes on.

Canon Abilities:
Scout - Mav knows his city better than anyone, and so if you need to go about unnoticed or have someone followed, he's your guy. Even outside Hades, he's good at staying under the radar and finding the best path forward.

AU INFORMATION

AU CHARACTER NAME: Ricky “Maverick” Marten-Taylor.
AGE: 18.
GRADE: 11th grade (held back, see backstory.)
AU BACKSTORY:
When he was five, a small band of bored, young vampires invaded his home by chance to pit his family and his neighbors against one another in games of death and luck. Those who lost the games were used as snacks, while the rest moved on to another round, then another, then another. Ricky’s mom eventually had to “lose” in the hopes of protecting him, as he was at a severe disadvantage, but when it was clear that he wasn't going to be able to survive the never-ending game situation, his dad sacrificed himself by creating enough of a distraction that his son could slip away. He managed to hide, but being unsure of where to go or what to do, he didn't actually get very far. He was found later by a couple of hunters in a literal dumpster of blood-drained corpses consisting of his parents and the neighbors that had died in other rounds of the games, where he'd managed to hide himself for many hours following the incident.

Ricky was picked up from this bad situation by a young seer woman, who he now only refers to as Mama. She didn't take him in right away, only wanting to fulfill her vision of finding him and getting him to safety that had led her and the pair of hunters to the dumpster, but as time went on, she kept having visions and dreams of him, and she fondly remembered the brief time they'd spent together. Eventually, she gave in and adopted him. She was too young and irresponsible to be the proper mom she wished, but fate didn't want her to give up and she certainly wasn't guaranteed a family of her own blood with the toll her ability was taking on her mind and body. Between her prophetic dreams and Ricky’s PTSD, there weren't many nights where someone didn't scream or cry themselves awake...but they had each other.

Due to poor attendance and violence-related suspensions at the age of 14, Ricky was ineligible to move forward with his mundane class. Rather than being held back, he decided to drop out, more confidently go by his chosen name of “Maverick” (though Mama was still allowed to call him Weasel, an affectionate nickname from their early years together), and acquire a plethora of tattoos and piercings. Turned out that once it wasn't demanded without clear purpose, Maverick actually enjoyed reading! His sudden thirst for books caused his writing/word-related power to manifest, and while he tried to keep it on the downlow, Mama knew all along and made arrangements with the academy for once Maverick got his shit together again and willingly sought out the chance to further his education. Being a few years rusty in a school setting and lacking in many basic subjects (and pretty scrawny), it was originally thought he would be placed in the grade he'd dropped from, but thanks to his interest in reading he was proficient enough to “skip” to 11th grade, high better suited his age as well. He thought he'd hate it, but some of those assholes were pretty similar to him, so eh, he can handle being a fancypants Candle for now. But...there's only so many Ricky Martin/Marten jokes he can handle, so whenever possible he corrects this to Maverick Taylor, or Marten-Taylor.

Also somehow???? he is now part time daddy to a shelter cat named Ricktoria, and she is beautiful and he loves her. Kanata Nanami is Other Dad.

AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION:
- Distrusting of those touched by the Outlands (particularly vampires) rather than the military. Still isn't super keen on guns or fire, but he can handle them slightly better than in canon, and he doesn't do good with enclosed spaces, being cold, and things moving in the dark.
- His relationship with his adoptive mother is slightly less friendly, though the love is still very much there. However, Mama had just turned 20 when she took Ricky in, whereas Ramona was 16 in canon, so while she wasn't fully ready for the responsibility, she did have an ever-so-slightly better handle on things.

RACE: Human.
SECRET SOCIETY: Candle, recruited by the school a few years after his power manifested, thanks to Mama wanting to give him time to adjust to the idea and clean up his act, since it wasn't something flashy or integral to fighting back the Nightfall.
POWERS:
Maverick has the supremely useful ability...to change colors of stuff. Not just any stuff, but a limited selection of stuff, and being real, to a limited selection of colors because he’s colorblind. Essentially it boils down to written word, and the tools that can be used to write those words. Handwriting, printed text, electronic messages, etc. are susceptible to having their color swapped as long as they are physical, visible words, as is anything that contains ink, chalk, basic acrylic paint, graphite, and all that, although it takes a bit more effort if it’s not in the form of a word, such as being a picture-based tattoo. If he concentrates hard enough he can even make words sparkle. He would rather die than reveal this to just anyone, but it makes for a bitchin’ Mother's Day card.

This ability manifested when Mav was about fifteen and first started to take a serious interest in reading. It also does have practical applications, such as adjusting a secret message to blend in with the background until a certain amount of time has passed or he sees it’s in the right hands, but because he's a dumb teen, he mostly wants to use it to make his tattoos even cooler. Maybe he’ll have secret message tattoos someday?

Due to his PTSD, Maverick doesn't have a strong hold on his Radiance, and finds it difficult to activate both at will and reflexively, especially without the same positive association he has with the writing thing.

[EDIT: 04/22/19 - FEY CONTRACT (THE GIRAFFE).]
Kiss it Better: A healing ability (physical wounds) that, like those silly fairytales, is tied to Maverick's kisses. It was acquired after making a Contract with the Giraffe, a fey in the forest near the academy, where he agreed to trade illustrations/picture books/designs for something to "bring his friend back", which was interpreted as "from the dead" because of course it was. In addition to the power, Maverick received a large tattoo of a giraffe on his back, which reappears over time if he uses his Flame ability to try and fade it out.

- A kiss on the lips is the most effective, but as long as Maverick's lips are touching the one being healed, the ability can activate.
- "True Love's Kiss" is stronger. Good luck with that.
- The more grievous the wound or effort expelled using the heal it, the more fatigued Maverick will be afterwards. His mental status effects his magic output, either blocking the ability or causing a surge of unnecessary magic if he's not in the right mind. Using too much too quickly can cause internal damage, particularly to his heart (of course), lungs, and gums. Bruises can form without apparent cause. With training, these effects can be mitigated.
- Maverick is unable to heal himself using this ability.
- Without proper knowledge of the injury or with a lack of training, more difficult injuries may heal improperly or leave room for a weak Blight-like infection. A broken bone will not automagically be set into its right place, potentially healing out of alignment and requiring further care.
- While typical healing can be learned well enough with proper training, resurrection (true or corrupted) is extremely difficult and, for all intents and purposes, out of someone like Maverick's depth. Despite it being what he earned in the bargain, he would have to be lucky, as well as trained, prepared, and in the right mindset, to actually pull it off.
- It can be theorized that if all conditions were met and Mav successfully resurrected someone, the effort would hospitalize him, likely from cardiac arrest.

ICly acquired: idk late April time is fake 4/20 blaze it because yolo or something idk
